Two Killed, Four Injured in 6.9 Magnitude Banten-Jakarta Earthquake

The centre of the quake to be in the Indian Ocean, 227km from Teluk Betung on Sumatra island.

At least one person has been killed and four others injured during the earthquake which struck Banten, Lampung and Jakarta yesterday, 2nd August 2019.

The powerful, undersea quake, which measured 6.9 in magnitude, meant a tsunami warning was issued by the Climatological, Meteorological, and Geophysics agency (BMKG). The warning lasted for two hours.

About 1,000 coastal dwellers fled to higher ground in fear of a tsunami, whilst some were also evacuated by the authorities.

The tremor was felt by many of Jakarta’s residents, especially in office areas and high rise buildings.
The BMKG also said that one of the victims had reportedly passed away due to a heart attack.

Earlier, around 1,000 people took shelter in gubernatorial offices in the Lampung province. They have now returned to their homes. The US Geological Survey estimated the centre of the quake to be in the Indian Ocean, 227km from Teluk Betung on Sumatra island.
