Mount Merapi

Fire has engulfed part of the forest slopes of Mount Merapi in Magelang, Central Java, on the night of 18th August. The cause of fire is yet to be reported.

Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Edy Susanto, explained that the fire broke in plot 36, Ngargosoko Village, Srumbung District. The first hotspot was first reported at around 18:45.

“Currently, volunteers are trying to reach the location of the hotspots, but the terrain is quite difficult. Some hotspots are located above PUD 5, which residents call Resa,” Edy added.

The BPBD is currently working with the Mount Merapi National Park (TNGM) to extinguish fires in the volcano’s region. They will also seek help from BPBD Magelang if required.
