Ikin Kuswara: Dedication and Work Ethics in Old Age

Kuswara reflects on nearly three decades of dedication to his work, sharing the joys and challenges of his journey as a food vendor while emphasising the importance of hard work and perseverance for his family’s future.

Ikin Kuswara has spent nearly 30 years selling food at a modest canteen in the Pondok Indah Office Tower area. In a brief interview, he shared his journey as a food vendor who has remained devoted to his work.

Originally from Garut, he chose to sell at the Pondok Indah Office Tower because he could not find another location. “There was no other place,” he said. Although he had worked in other fields, such as in cleaning services for two years at Pondok Indah Mall, he felt his fortune was better when he opened his own business. “This is what I do now,” he explained. Since then, he has faithfully worked every Monday to Friday, from 6 AM to 8 PM. On weekends, he prefers to rest at home with his family.

Kuswara revealed that, during his 30-year career as a food vendor at the canteen, he has experienced many highs and lows. One of the joys he mentioned was the close relationship he has developed with his customers. “They are like family because we meet every day,” he remarked. However, he has also faced challenges, particularly related to rising rental costs. “The downside is the rent keeps increasing,” he continued. Despite this, his passion for continuing to work remains strong, especially for the sake of his family.

Regarding his income, Kuswara admitted that while it is sufficient for his daily needs, he always feels the need to do more. “If it’s not enough, I have to make it work,” he said. He lives with his wife and three children and hopes to provide them with a better education. “I want to send my children to higher education, not just like me who only finished primary school,” he added, filled with hope.

At his old age, Kuswara’s enthusiasm for work has never waned. For him, working is not only about meeting his daily needs but also about giving his children a better future. “As long as I’m healthy, I will keep working,” Kuswara said with a smile full of determination. He hopes his children will be more successful and achieve higher education.

Kuswara’s message to people out there is simple but meaningful: “Keep working as long as you’re healthy. Insya Allah, if we keep trying, the results will come.” This is a message full of spirit from a man who has spent nearly half a century living with dedication and hard work.
