New Cameras Detect over 1,000 Traffic Violations in Jakarta in 10 Days

traffic violations in Jakarta caught by camera

Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) cameras have recorded over 1,000 cases of traffic violations since the launch on 1st July 2019.

The system had been installed on major streets in Jakarta to identify violations such cars running red lights, motorbikers not wearing helmets, and exceeding the designated speed limit.

Jakarta Police spokesman, Senior Commander Argo Yuwono, confirmed that traffic violators will receive a notification from the police. “We hope that, with this system, drivers will become more disciplined and comply with the traffic laws,” he added.

There are currently twelve ETLE cameras along Jl. MH Thamrin from the Jl. Sudirman intersection to Jl. Gajah Mada. Additional cameras will be added soon in different areas of the capital. The ETLE cameras are known to be more technologically advanced in comparison with CCTV systems.

“The new ETLE cameras are able to zoom inside the car using the ‘checkpoint’ feature to see if the driver and passengers are wearing seat belts. In addition, the ‘speed radar’ feature records vehicles that drive over the speed limit,” the policeman advised.

Once the camera captures the image of the violator, the data is transmitted to the traffic police for verification and identification. The police will then send a warning letter to the registered address of the driver.
