Luhut: Nias to be Promoted as a Global Tourist Destination

Nias as tourist destination

Luhut Pandjaitan, Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister, has said that the government plans to transform Nias into a global tourist destination.

Luhut visited Nias to launch an annual maritime event, Sail Festival 2019, which was held at Teluk Dalam Seaport, South Nias District, in North Sumatra Province.

“We see Nias as one of the most popular regions for surfing. We have organised international surfing competitions here. The tourism minister is also present here. We are determined to make Nias better,” Luhut said.

He further stated that the government is keen to help boost tourism to promote better welfare among citizens.

The Sail festival is being held for the 11th time this year. It was first held in Bunaken, North Sulawesi, in 2009.

As Nias hosts the festival this year, an international surfing contest, a battleship parade, the Nias Marathon, a culinary bazaar, traditional art, and cultural performances will also take place, with ‘Wonderful Nias’ as the theme.

Among the hidden jewels of Nias island is Sorake beach, which is recognised as the second-best place to surf, after Hawaii.
