Jakarta Ranked as 12th Worst Congested City in the World

According to the Inrix 2017 Traffic Scorecard, Jakarta is 12th worst congested city in the world. This is 10 spots higher than last year’s position as 22nd, indicating that the city’s congestion has dramatically worsened in the past year.

After surveying a total of 1,360 cities in 38 countries around the world, Indonesia’s capital was ranked just below Bangkok on the list. Los Angeles took the top position for the worst traffic in the world, followed by Moscow, New York, Sao Paulo, San Francisco, Bogota and London.

The National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) has estimated that traffic congestion in Jakarta caused economic losses of about Rp. 67.5 trillion (US$ 4.73 billion) throughout the year 2017.

The Indonesian government has implemented several rules in the last few years to help alleviate traffic in Jakarta, with the latest one being the odd-even license plate rule, which was enforced on August 2016.

However, Jakarta is still ranked by Inrix as the most congested city in Indonesia, followed by Bandung, Malang, Yogyakarta, Padang, Medan, Pontianak, Surabaya, Semarang and Denpasar.
