Mayapada Healthcare has launched the Liver, Metabolic & Wellness Center (LMWC) at Mayapada Hospital Bandung (MHBD), one of the hospital units under Mayapada Healthcare.
The Liver, Metabolic & Wellness Center is a service programme focused on early detection, prevention, and comprehensive management of liver diseases related to metabolic disorders. This service responds to the increasing number of liver disease cases globally, which are now increasingly linked to metabolic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidaemia.
Hospital Director of Mayapada Hospital Bandung, Dr Irwan Susanto Hermawan, MM, emphasised that this condition poses a serious challenge because it is often not detected early. “Metabolic liver disease, including fatty liver, often develops without symptoms. Many patients only become aware of their condition when it has already reached an advanced stage. Through the Liver, Metabolic & Wellness Center (LMWC), we aim to shift the approach from treatment alone to a more integrated system of early detection and prevention. This service prioritises a multidisciplinary approach with a comprehensive wellness programme, so patients can receive more holistic and sustainable care,” said Dr Irwan.
LMWC provides integrated services for liver health, metabolic disorders, and weight management, with a focus on early detection of risks such as obesity, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, and metabolic syndrome. Early screening aims to identify risks at an early stage, allowing individuals to receive personalised care. The LMWC service is supported by a multidisciplinary team consisting of Consultant Internal Medicine Specialists in Gastroenterohepatology, Consultant Digestive Surgeons, Consultant Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes Specialists, Clinical Nutrition Specialists, and Sports Medicine Specialists.
The care pathway includes initial screening, medical evaluation, nutritional support, medical therapy, and further intervention if required, along with regular monitoring of liver health and metabolic conditions to ensure timely intervention. The service is also supported by FibroScan® elastography technology to assess liver stiffness and condition in a non-invasive way, as well as Total Body Matrix Assessment (TBMA) to evaluate body composition and metabolic indicators, enabling tailored treatment programmes, dietary plans, and physical activity recommendations based on each patient’s condition.
Highlighting the close link between obesity and metabolic disorders, Prof. Dr dr Reno Rudiman, MSc, Sp.B-Subsp BD (K), FICS, FCSI, Consultant Digestive Surgeon at Mayapada Hospital Bandung, emphasised that obesity is a chronic medical condition that lies at the root of various diseases, including fatty liver.
“Obesity does not only affect body weight, but also triggers various metabolic disorders, including fatty liver. Without proper management, fatty liver can progress into more serious conditions such as cirrhosis and even liver cancer. Therefore, this disease must be controlled through early detection, appropriate treatment, and adjustments in diet and lifestyle. Given its increasing prevalence and the high number of undiagnosed cases, a comprehensive early approach is essential. In certain cases, when lifestyle interventions and medical therapy do not yield optimal results, bariatric surgery is a proven effective treatment for controlling obesity while also improving metabolic conditions more broadly,” Prof Reno explained.
Prof Reno added that fatty liver, now known as Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), has become the most common liver disease in the world, with a prevalence of around 30% of the adult population. “This means nearly one in three adults is at risk of fatty liver. The condition is closely associated with metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes, and is often asymptomatic in the early stages, meaning it is frequently only detected at a later stage. Managing fatty liver is not only about medication; it also requires lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, physical activity, and weight management. Therefore, a comprehensive approach with continuous support is key to achieving optimal outcomes,” he said.
The introduction of LMWC as part of the Gastrohepatology Center marks Mayapada Healthcare’s commitment to expanding public access to comprehensive liver and metabolic care across the Mayapada Hospital network. Available in South Jakarta (Lebak Bulus and Kuningan Rasuna Said), Tangerang, Bogor, Surabaya, and Bandung, and soon to be launched in East Jakarta, the service is supported by multidisciplinary teams and modern facilities, covering everything from screening to advanced therapy accessible through various service channels.
