After a period of limited flight services, Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung, West Java, is set to resume operations as an international airport.

The government previously targeted Husein Sastranegara Airport to begin serving limited jet flights on the 17th of August 2026. Full operations are expected to commence on the 17th of September 2026, after all safety, security, and airport facilities have been declared ready. The plan is for the airport to operate 11–12 domestic flights and two international routes to Malaysia and Singapore.

So far, the government’s plan for Husein Sastranegara Airport has received a positive response from airlines. The Indonesia National Air Carriers Association believes the airport’s reopening has the potential to restore Bandung‘s aviation market to the level it reached before operations were transferred to Kertajati Airport.

However, in addition to conducting internal evaluations, airlines are still awaiting updates from the airport’s management, as these updates will be used to determine their readiness to reopen flight routes. Furthermore, the government has requested that Angkasa Pura expedite the completion of several projects, including runway and taxiway repairs, apron reconstruction, terminal improvements, and compliance with Aviation Accident and Firefighting standards before full operations begin.

We are also awaiting updates from airport management regarding this readiness,” said the Secretary General of the Indonesia National Air Carriers Association, Bayu Sutanto, on Tuesday, the 14th of July.

Husein Sastranegara Airport has been known for its limited activity in recent years. In 2025, the airport’s services were limited to propeller aircraft operating on short-haul routes.

“Husein [Sastranegara] Airport is not closed; it is still operational, with propeller-driven flights to Pangandaran [Nusawiru Airport] and Halim [Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport]. However, it is no longer possible to reactivate Husein [Sastranegara] Airport to serve long-haul commercial flights using jet aircraft. Technically, Husein [Sastranegara] Airport is no longer capable of being landed by jet aircraft,” previously said Dhani Gumelar, the Head of the West Java Transportation Agency, back in June 2025.
