New Year’s Eve is a moment eagerly anticipated by many. The sound of firecrackers echoing through the air symbolises joy and renewed hope. Amidst the festive hustle and bustle, a man named Lutfi seizes the opportunity to sell firecrackers by the roadside.

Lutfi, a private-sector employee in Jakarta, has an inspiring story. Every year, as the year-end approaches, he takes time off work to try his luck selling firecrackers.

“This only happens once a year, during big occasions like New Year or Eid al-Fitr,” said Lutfi as he neatly arranged his wares. He explained that selling firecrackers is just a side job, but it provides a helpful boost to his family’s income.

Lutfi makes the most of his holiday time. Rather than staying idle at home, he chooses to head out to the streets, offering firecrackers to eager buyers preparing to celebrate the new year.

“Rather than sitting around doing nothing, it’s better to sell something. It’s a good way to support my finances,” he said with a smile.

However, this work is not without its challenges. Lutfi shared that the weather is his biggest obstacle. “When it rains, there are fewer buyers, so sales drop,” he admitted. Yet, he remains undeterred. For Lutfi, each hurdle is part of the journey, and he firmly believes that hard work will always yield results.

“I enjoy doing something productive while earning extra money. It’s much better than doing nothing,” he remarked. With enthusiasm, Lutfi works tirelessly from morning until night, often taking turns with a friend. For him, this endeavour is more than just a job—it’s also a way to cultivate patience and resilience.

The street where Lutfi sets up shop is lined with other traders selling firecrackers. Despite the competition, Lutfi stays optimistic. “There are many competitors, but this only happens once a year. If it’s meant to be your fortune, it will come your way,” he said with confidence.

Lutfi exemplifies how one can seize even the smallest opportunities to make a difference. In his modest way, he demonstrates that hard work and ingenuity are essential for not only surviving but thriving, even amidst stiff competition. His story is a reminder that with dedication and creativity, every challenge can be turned into an opportunity.
