During a meeting in Paris, the Indonesian Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, Erick Thohir, encourages TikTok and YouTube to support local creators and explore investment opportunities in Indonesia’s thriving digital economy.

Quoted from the Instagram account @erickthohir, Erick Thohir held a meeting with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew and YouTube CEO Neal Mohan on the sidelines of the Olympics in Paris, France. They discussed the potential of Indonesia’s digital economy.

In the meeting, Thohir invited the two CEOs to invest in Indonesia, after which the latter promised to visit the country. Thohir also stated that he was ready to introduce them to President Joko Widodo or President-elect Prabowo Subianto.

“Don’t just make Indonesia a market,” Thohir told the press on Tuesday, the 30th of July. “And I also conveyed to the CEO of TikTok the importance of maintaining the nation’s cultural heritage.”

Thohir assessed that TikTok could be a platform for freedom of speech and a venue to showcase talents like Indonesian content creators. He believed that Indonesia could be a worthy place for TikTok to invest. In addition, he explained that the digital economy in Indonesia has the potential to reach Rp4,500 trillion.

Thohir felt optimistic that Chew and Mohan were also ready to support both the digital potential in Indonesia and local content creators.

“I also conveyed to YouTube and TikTok that the potential must be worked on together, but it must also be a win-win,” added Thohir.
