Terror group Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the bombing in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta, Wednesday night, May 24, confirming police suspicions.
“We already suspected they were a cell of a network affiliated with ISIS. We thought this because the explosives were almost identical to other terror bombings,” National Police Spokesman Sr. Comr. Martinus Sitompul said Friday morning, as reported by Detik.
“If there is a global attack they want to show themselves,” he added.
A statement released by ISIS’s official news agency, Amaq, claimed responsibility in a statement overnight.
“The executors of the attack on the Indonesian police in Jakarta are ISIS fighters,” the statement read.
Three police officers and two suicide bombers were killed during the attack at a bus terminal in Kampung Melayu around 9 pm Wednesday night. Eleven others remain hospitalised.
