21 Dead After Tour Bus Plunges into Ravine

Ravine

Twenty-one people died and nine others were severely injured on Saturday afternoon, when the driver of the bus they were traveling in lost control of the vehicle in Sukabumi, West Java, causing the bus to plunge into 30-meter-deep ravine.

A hospital employee at Palabuhanratu Regional Hospital in Sukabumi, Taufik, confirmed the casualties.

The bus had been among four tour buses hired by the Catur Putra Raya entourage from Bogor, West Java. They were headed Citarik River for a rafting trip as part of an employee gathering.

West Java Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko said on Saturday that the bus had been traveling behind the three others and he suspected that it may have had a faulty brake, causing the driver to lose control while attempting to drive down the steep road.

“It happened at about 12 p.m.,” Trunoyudo said.

A similar accident occurred on Jl. Cisarakan, an uphill road, last month, when a mini bus plunged into a 50-m ravine, killing one and injuring four.
