Pope Appoints Jakarta Archbishop as Indonesia’s Third Cardinal

Pope Francis

Pope Francis has announced that Jakarta’s Archbishop Mgr. Ignatius Suharyo will be one of the 13 new cardinals to be appointed in a consistory meeting which will be held in October.

The Pope announced this after his Angelus at St. Peter’s Square at Vatican City.

“I will hold a consistory for the appointment of 10 new cardinals in October. Their origin expresses the missionary vocation of the Church, which continues to proclaim the merciful love of God to all the people of the Earth,” Pope Francis stated.

Suharyo has held the position of archbishop since 2010. He will be the third cardinal to be elected from Indonesia, after Semarang archbishop Justinus Darmojuwono and former Jakarta archbishop Julius Darmaatmadja.

“Let us pray for the new cardinals so that, confirming their adherence to Christ, they may help me in my ministry as Bishop of Rome for the good of all the holy faithful people of God,” The Pope added.

Meanwhile, Jakarta archdiocese secretary Adi Prasojo expressed his excitement and attributed Suharyo’s nomination to the good leadership he has displayed over the years.

“His appointment also shows the importance of Indonesia in the eyes of the Vatican, especially in terms of diversity and tolerance,” Adi added.
