South Jakarta is home to the largest expatriate population in Jakarta, with 3,048 foreign nationals holding valid residence permits in the year 2025, according to recent data by Statistics Indonesia (Badan Pusat Statistik or BPS).
According to official data from Statistics Indonesia, the total population of expatriates holding valid residence permits in Jakarta in the year 2025 reached 8,483 individuals. ‘Valid residence permits’ refers to visas and official authorisations issued by the Directorate General of Immigration, including short-visit permits, limited-stay permits, permanent-stay permits, and Golden Visas.
Out of all subregions in Jakarta, the data indicate that South Jakarta ranks first, with the highest number of expatriates, totalling 3,048 individuals (approximately 36% of the overall total). This figure includes 2,043 men and 1,005 women.
North Jakarta ranks second, with 1,995 individuals, including 1,114 men and 851 women. West Jakarta ranks third, with 1,443 foreign nationals, including 880 men and 563 women. Central Jakarta follows with 1,217 individuals, including 731 men and 486 women. East Jakarta has the lowest number of foreign nationals, with 780 individuals, including 548 men and 232 women.
Meanwhile, the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu) recorded no registered foreign nationals within its territory in the year 2025.
The high concentration of expatriates in South and North Jakarta reflects the presence of supporting facilities tailored to the needs of foreign residents, such as international schools, shopping centres, and Grade A office spaces. This distribution also serves as a key indicator for property developers and service-sector businesses in identifying potential target markets within the metropolitan area.
