3 Foreigners Injured in Lombok Helicopter Crash

Three foreigners and an Indonesian pilot were injured after a helicopter crash-landed in a rice field on the Indonesian island of Lombok on Sunday (14/07/2019) afternoon.

Local media reports quoted police as saying the Bell 206-L4 helicopter went down at 2.03pm near Gilik hamlet, Kawo village, when preparing to land at nearby Lombok International Airport.

Police said the chopper was piloted by Indonesian captain Kustiyadi, while his passengers were Luka Marie of Germany, Nicholas Alexander of England and Donoso Lilo of Chile.

Rescue crews arrived at the scene within half an hour. The pilot and passengers were evacuated and taken to Praya General Hospital at 3.03pm. Luka Marie reportedly suffered a broken leg, while the other three occupants sustained minor injuries.

CNN Indonesia reported the helicopter was owned by PT Carpediem Air, which offers charter flights under the brand name Fly Bali, and had been flying a tour route from Labuan Bajo, a fishing town on Flores Island, to Lombok International Airport. The pilot had apparently been given permission to land shortly before the crash occurred, but the chopper then began to suffer engine failure at an altitude of about 500 meters.
