Former First Lady Ani Yudhoyono Loses Battle to Cancer

Ani Yudhoyono

Kristiani Herrawati Yudhoyono, wife of former Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, passed away at the National University Hospital in Singapore, at 11.50 am local time.

The former first lady, fondly called ‘Ibu Ani’ by Indonesians, had been undergoing treatment for leukemia, or blood cancer, at the Singapore hospital for the last four months.

A bone marrow transplant was initially scheduled for Mrs. Yudhoyono, with her brother as a donor. Medical practitioners at the hospital and family members were anxiously waiting for her condition to improve, before attempting the onerous surgery. Two weeks ago, Mrs. Yudhoyono was allowed to seek fresh air outside the hospital, after three months of confinement. The former first lady had documented her short, enjoyable sojourn in the hospital gardens via her Instagram account.

Unfortunately, her condition slowly deteriorated over the past week. She was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Tuesday 28th May 2019, where she lost consciousness.

Ani Yudhoyono’s body will be escorted to the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore for prayers, before being flown to Indonesia tomorrow. Her final resting place will be at the National Heroes Cemetery in Kalibata, South Jakarta. Mrs. Yudhoyono, who is the daughter of late Indonesian military leader, Sarwo Edhie Wibowo, was 66. She is survived by her mother, husband, two sons and two daughters-in-law, six siblings, and four grandchildren.
