Initial investigations into the terror attack at Kampung Melayu bus terminal in East Jakarta Wednesday night, May 24, have revealed pressure cooker bombs were likely used to kill three police officers and injure ten bystanders.
National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasisto on Thursday said pressure cookers had been filled with explosives, nails and shrapnel.
Wasisto said evidence of a pressure cooker purchase earlier in the week had been found in the belongings of one of the killed suspects, Tempo reported.
Police are still working to confirm the type of explosive used in the attack.
Meanwhile, speaking after the funeral of officer Taufan Tsunami, Metro Jaya Police Chief Brig. Gen. Suntana called on officers to not be afraid in the wake of the attack.
“We remind all police officers not to be afraid of duty. Say no to terrorists and do not be afraid. Let’s join together against terrorism,” Suntana said, as reported by Detik.
“Police and TNI (Indonesian military) are joined in guarding the security of this country against certain groups who want to cause chaos,” he added.
The use of pressure cooker bombs is common in Indonesia, with police uncovering a plot to use similar bombs in an attack on the Presidential Palace, Central Jakarta, late last year.
Investigations continue.
