Indonesia Improving Disaster Mitigation Technology to Boost Tourism

Indonesia is in the process of developing disaster mitigation technology in various tourist destinations. In a press statement on Thursday, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya revealed that the country is slowly taking steps towards the tourism standards that have been introduced by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Indonesia is currently placed 42nd in the world on the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) of the World Economic Forum (WEF). The Ministry of Tourism aims to improve Indonesia’s position up to30th by increasing the competitiveness of its tourism industry in the global market.

The Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) head Hammam Riza, added that the agency encourages the use of early warning systems at tourist destinations which are more prone towards natural disasters. Natural disasters include geological incidents such as earthquakes and tsunamis, and hydrometeorological occurrences, such as flooding and landslides. The three types of technology currently being progressed through development are the Flood Early Warning System (FEWS), Landslide Early Warning System (LEWS) and Red White Buoy system for tsunamis.
