Visitors of Taman Safari Indonesia will soon be able to see a pair of China’s giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), whose arrival has been much-anticipated in the animal theme park.
Following delays, a group of officials from Taman Safari Indonesia finally flew to Sichuan Province in China on Saturday to pick up the pair of giant pandas from Chengdu Panda Base, a conservation center for giant pandas in China.
“The two pandas are called Cai Tao and Hu Chun,” said Triyoba Nataria, Group Head Marketing for Taman Safari Indonesia on Sunday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
Cai Tao is a seven-year-old male weighing 128 kilograms, while Hu Chun is a female weighing 113 kg. Giant pandas are recognized by their distinctive black patches around the eyes, over the ears, and across their round bodies.
Triyoba states that the pandas are expected to arrive in Indonesia on September 28, 2017, but will be quarantined at Taman Safari Indonesia for a few weeks before they are presented to the public.
“The soft launch may be (held) in late October or early November,” he added.
