Thousands of Illegal Liquor Bottles Crushed by Steamroller in Jakarta

Bottles of bootleg alcohol were crushed by a steamroller

Approximately 18,000 bottles of bootleg alcohol were crushed by a steamroller in Jakarta on Monday 27th May 2019.

The illegal liquor had been collected by the police during raids over recent months. They were later displayed and crushed by a steamroller that was driven by a police officer.

During the month of Ramadhan, authorities often seize and destroy alcoholic beverages in large quantities to remind Muslims to abstain from intoxication during the month of Ramadan. The booze-crushing event took place on Monday near the National Monument, Central Jakarta.

Jakarta governor, Anies Baswedan, has also warned residents to avoid circulating illegal liquor. He further elaborated that the community’s job is to reduce the demand for booze, since supply will always exist, and will adjust according to the demands of the people.

While alcohol consumption is forbidden for Muslims, most Indonesians subscribe to a moderate form of Islam. Alcohol remains widely available throughout the country, especially in the major nightclubs of Jakarta and Bali. However, many nightclubs and entertainment spots remain closed during the month of Ramadan.
