STA Names Jakarta One of Most Improved Cities – Observer Credits Previous Administration

Jakarta as one of the world?s top three most improved cities in terms of its transportation system and mobility.

The Sustainable Transport Award (STA) has named Jakarta as one of the world’s top three most improved cities in terms of its transportation system and mobility.

Governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan posted information about the accolade on his Instagram page.

Djoko Setijowarno, an observer from the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI), has credited Jakarta’s improved transportation sector to the works of the previous administration. He mentioned that the city’s transportation system has improved since governor Fauzi Bowo was replaced by Joko Widodo in 2012.

“This achievement is the result of past works done by several parties and institutions,” Djoko added. He further explained that the previous governors had started developing Jakarta’s transport system with the Transjakarta buses. In 2012 the Transjakarta buses only had six corridors. Joko Widodo, who was the Jakarta governor back in 2012-2014, managed to increase the number of routes to 39. Three years later, the buses had 80 corridors.

Djoko also attributed the improvements to the central government’s efforts. The commuter line train has also undergone significant improvements since 2014, with more comfortable seating and routes added to Cikarang and Bekasi.

“So the Railway Directorate General has also made a contribution,” he said. The directorate had also established the Greater Jakarta Transportation Agency (BPTJ) to improve the transportation system, in line with the issuance of the Jakarta Transportation System Blueprint (RITJ).
