Indonesia’s Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani has stated that the government will limit the number of foreign workers allowed into Indonesia.
She delivered the statement while addressing the reviews made by the House of Representatives (DPR) on Macroeconomic Framework and the Principles of Fiscal Policy of the 2020 Revenue and Expenditure Budget Plan.
The minister further elaborated that only foreign workers with special expertise and working in skilled jobs will be allowed to enter Indonesia. She also aims to strengthen Indonesia’s domestic workforce, as there is a large number of young, productive people with skills that require improvement. The government will place emphasis on vocational training, apprenticeships, and improvements in the educational system to increase the quality of skills in the domestic worker market.
Earlier, Manpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri estimated the number of foreign workers in Indonesia to be at 95,000 – a relatively ‘safe’ number. He also stressed that foreigners will have to undergo strict regulations in order to land a job in Indonesia.
