New Zealand School Jakarta (NZSJ) hosted a vibrant celebration of Waitangi Day on Friday, 7th of February 2025. The event, which took place from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, was a joyous occasion filled with cultural performances, delectable foods, and a strong sense of community among students, parents, and staff.

The celebration commenced with a heartfelt performance by the students, who proudly sang the New Zealand National Anthem, “God Defend New Zealand“, and a Haka dance performance. Their melodic voices resonated throughout the school grounds, setting the perfect tone to commemorate New Zealand’s national day.

The Meaning Behind the Waitangi Day Celebration

Waitangi Day, observed annually on the 6th of February, commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, a foundational document in New Zealand’s history. The treaty was signed between representatives of the British Crown and Māori chiefs of Aotearoa (New Zealand), with the intention of establishing British governance while recognising Māori land rights and sovereignty.

Despite historical challenges, Waitangi Day has evolved into a national occasion for reflection, dialogue, and celebration of the country’s bicultural identity. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey towards reconciliation and unity between Māori and New Zealanders of European descent, as well as the shared values of respect, diversity, and inclusion that define the nation.

The NZSJ celebration aimed to bring the essence of this significant day to the school community. By commemorating Waitangi Day, the school fostered a deeper understanding of New Zealand’s history and encouraged a sense of school pride among its students, staff, and families.

Entertainment was at the heart of the event, with students taking centre stage to showcase their talents. Among the standout performances was the theatrical production titled Moana’s Time Travel Adventure. This original play, performed by NZSJ students, creatively blended elements of Māori mythology and modern storytelling, taking the audience on an exciting journey through time.

Another captivating performance was a musical showcase by the elementary students, featuring a mix of contemporary and traditional Māori songs. The students’ enthusiasm and dedication to their craft were evident, earning them rounds of applause from the delighted audience.

A Message of Unity and Appreciation

The event was not only a celebration of culture but also an opportunity for the school community to come together in a spirit of unity. Mr. Tim, the Head of School of NZSJ, expressed his gratitude for the hard work put into making the event a success. He stated, “Waitangi Day is a time to reflect on our shared values that bring us together as a community. Seeing our students embrace these ideas and the spirit of Waitangi Day is truly heartwarming.”

Parents and guests also commended the school for its commitment to fostering cultural appreciation and inclusivity. Many remarked that the event provided a meaningful way for students to learn about New Zealand while also celebrating diversity in an international setting.

Looking Ahead

As the event came to a close, attendees left with smiles on their faces and a deeper appreciation for New Zealand’s rich cultural heritage. The success of this year’s Waitangi Day celebration at NZSJ reaffirmed the school’s dedication to creating meaningful cultural experiences for its students.

With such a memorable gathering, the school community eagerly anticipates future celebrations that continue to honour traditions, build connections, and strengthen the bonds of friendship between cultures. For NZSJ, Waitangi Day is more than just a date on the calendar—it is a time to celebrate unity and connect with our community.
