Mbah Moen Passes Away at 90, NU: Indonesia has Lost One of its Role Models

President Jokowi with Mbah Moen

Helmy Faishal Zaini, Secretary-General of Indonesia’s largest Muslim organisation, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), expressed his condolences over the passing of NU’s advisory board member KH Maimoen Zubair on 6th August.

The Muslim cleric is fondly called ‘Mbah Moen’ by Indonesians.

“Boards of NU hereby say innalillahi wainna ilaihi rojiun. We express deep condolences. Indonesia is losing one of its role models, leaders and community protectors,” Helmy said in a written statement. The renowned ulema passed away during Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, at the age of 90.

Helmy further commented that Indonesia has lost a charismatic figure and a legend. He also urged members of the Nahdlatul Ulama and the public to offer prayers for him. “May Allah SWT offer him the most glorious place,” he added.

Helmy hopes that the NU will carry on his legacy to promote peace and harmony among Indonesian people.

Maimoen Zubair was known for his determination to maintain Islamic Indonesian values. He once said that Indonesia’s independence is a gift from God after the people’s sincere struggle to eradicate colonialism. Mbah Moen was also known to have offered President Joko Widodo a green scarf as a symbol of support during the 2019 presidential election.
