Take a Moment to Rest: Mothers Also Need Pampering After Giving Birth for Good Mental Health

Caring for your baby starts with caring for yourself—why mothers need rest and support after childbirth.

Becoming a mother is a life-changing experience, filled with both joy and challenges. After going through the demanding process of childbirth, many mothers focus so much on their baby’s needs that they overlook their own well-being. In fact, the postpartum period is a crucial time for mothers to recover physically, mentally, and emotionally, including by taking time for self-care and pampering.

Joice Novita Kristianto, S.Psi., psychologist at Bethsaida Hospital Gading Serpong, emphasises that pampering is not merely a luxury, but a psychological necessity. “After giving birth, mothers experience significant hormonal changes. Combined with fatigue, lack of sleep, and emotional pressure, this can trigger baby blues or even postnatal depression. That is why self-care in the form of pampering should be prioritised,” she explained.

Me-Time and Pampering: An Investment in Mental Health

According to Joice, many mothers feel guilty about taking time for themselves after giving birth. In reality, me-time and pampering help maintain emotional stability, boost self-confidence, and enable mothers to better embrace their new role.

“Pampering can be as simple as relaxation, getting quality sleep, skincare treatments, or consulting a psychologist. The most important thing is to create space for mothers to feel comfortable, valued, and reconnected with themselves,” she added.

It’s Time for Mothers to Receive More Care

After nine months of pregnancy and the experience of childbirth, mothers deserve proper attention and care—both physically and emotionally. With professional support from the Psychology Clinic and pampering services included in the Premium Maternity Package at Bethsaida Hospital Gading Serpong, every mother can feel supported during the early stages of her journey into motherhood.

“Every mother has her own story and challenges. We are here not to judge, but to support them with a warm and empathetic approach,” said Joice.

The role of fathers is also essential. Active involvement in childcare allows mothers the time and space to care for themselves. This may include sharing responsibilities such as attending to the baby during the night, washing bottles and clothes, changing nappies, bathing the baby, and other daily tasks.

With a partner’s support, mothers are less likely to feel alone, which can help reduce the risk of baby blues.

The Director of Bethsaida Hospital Gading Serpong, dr Pitono, stated that the hospital is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for mothers. “We understand the importance of maintaining mental health for mothers who have just welcomed their babies. This is essential in preventing conditions such as baby blues or postnatal depression. Therefore, the Women’s Health Centre at Bethsaida Hospital offers a Premium Maternity Package with a range of benefits designed to support mothers’ mental well-being. It is not only about childbirth services, but also includes psychological consultation,” he said.

He also emphasised the importance of an integrated approach involving obstetric, paediatric, and psychological care. “We want mothers to feel that they are not alone. There is a dedicated team ready to support them every step of the way.”
