BMKG: High Waves To Strike West Java’ South Coast

Raining Bandung

The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) has warned fishing communities and tourists along West Java’s south coast, predicting heavy waves and unpredictable weather.

The BMKG warned waves can reach up to 3.5 metres along the south coast, including in Pelabuhan Ratu, Ujung Genteng and Pangandaran.

“People are advised to beware of the high waves, which are ranged from 1.5 metres to 3.5 metres,” BMKG Bandung forecaster, Yadi Hendarmin, said.

He also asked local fishermen to temporarily avoid going out to sea for the immediate future.

“For the fishermen, BMKG suggest to temporarily stop going seaward in accordance to Kesatuan Penjagaan Laut dan Pantai (Sea and Coast Guard Union) authority,” h Hendarmin added.

According to BMKG data, the high waves will hit West Java’s South Coast until mid-May. The high waves are seasonal and are caused by winding blowing from the southeast during the transitional period from the wet to dry season.

“We are still in the transition period. There is gradual decrease in rainfall throughout May.”

Bandung is likely to face low-intensity rain until the second part of May due to the change.

“The closed wind circulation on the west of Sumatra and Natuna Sea caused accumulated wet air mass in those areas, while the air mass which is passing West area of Java is more dry so the forming of rain cloud is more hampered and eventually led to mild rain,” he said.
