All hiking trails to Mount Rinjani, Lombok, are closed effective from the 10th of February due to extreme weather which also affected several non-hiking destinations in the area.

The Mount Rinjani National Park Office announced the closure of the hiking trail to Mount Rinjani in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, starting from Monday, the 10th of February. This closure will last until the weather returns to normal.

The Head of the Mount Rinjani National Park Office, Yarman, explained that this closure was the impact of extreme weather in West Nusa Tenggara caused by Tropical Cyclone Seed Invest 96S.

Closed starting from the 10th of February, 2025, until the announcement of reopening is issued, said Yarman in a press release on Tuesday, the 11th of February.

He added, “That extreme weather is currently occurring in the West Nusa Tenggara region caused by Tropical Cyclone Seed Invest 96S, Equatorial Rossby atmospheric wave activity, and the Asian Monsoon. Thus, it is necessary to be aware of the potential for hydrometeorological disasters such as heavy rain, strong winds, and the potential impact of floods, landslides, as well as fallen trees.”

Head of the ZAM Meteorological Station, Satria Topan Primadi, also divulged that, based on the results of the analysis of atmospheric dynamics, there are atmospheric disturbances that can cause an increase in the potential for extreme weather in some areas of West Nusa Tenggara.

“The results of the analysis of the atmospheric dynamics conditions, supported by the La Nina phenomenon which is currently still active, show the potential for increased growth of convective clouds [Cumulonimbus clouds] in several areas of West Nusa Tenggara,” he said in a press release as well.
