Jakarta Urged to Work from Home as Major Events Converge on the 5th of September

With the Grand Mass at Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) and the Indonesia Sustainability Forum (ISF) at the Jakarta Convention Center, Jakarta’s Acting Governor Heru Budi Hartono advised workers to work from home to avoid anticipated congestion.

The Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta, Heru Budi Hartono, has urged workers in Jakarta to work from home (WFH) on Thursday, the 5th of September, as two major events will be taking place on the same day.

Hartono explained that those two major events are the Grand Mass which will be led by Pope Francis in the Gelora Bung Karno area, and the Indonesia Sustainability Forum which will be held at the Jakarta Convention Center.

According to information from the Head of State Protocol, Andy Rachmianto, Pope Francis is scheduled to make a state visit to Indonesia from the 3rd until the 6th of September. On the 4th of September, the Pope will meet with President Joko Widodo at the Merdeka Palace. Then, on the following day, the Pope will participate in a meeting with interfaith leaders at the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, after which he will lead a Grand Mass planned to be held at GBK. The mass is expected to be attended by around 90,000 Catholics, commencing at 5 PM local time.

Meanwhile, the Indonesia Sustainability Forum will be opened by President Joko Widodo and attended by several international delegates.

The Grand Mass, held simultaneously with the Indonesia Sustainability Forum, is anticipated to cause significant congestion. Hence, Hartono has urged workers in Jakarta to work from home (WFH) on Thursday, the 5th of September.

The public can consider this and independently decide to WFH,” said Hartono at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Monday, the 26th of August.

In addition, the Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency, Syafrin Liputo, also encouraged the public travelling to GBK to use public transportation.

“We will enhance Transjakarta services from bus stops likely to experience high traffic, ensuring they directly serve GBK,” said Liputo.
