Three earthquakes have reportedly jolted two different locations in east Indonesia, today, 24th April.
At 9 am a 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck Daruba, North Maluku and then at 10.28 am a 5.0 magnitude aftershock followed at the same location. Earlier, before dawn, a mild earthquake was also reported to have hit Sorong, West Papua, measuring 3.4 on the Richter Magnitude Scale.
The meteorological, climatological and geophysical agency of Indonesia (BMKG) has stated that the quakes have no potential to cause a tsunami.
According to the BMKG, the quake in Daruba centered at 2.29 north latitude and 128.15 east longitude, with a depth of 100 km. The location of this earthquake was 31 km northwest of the city.
Meanwhile, BMKG Sorong confirmed that the earthquake was located at 0.61 south latitude, 131.85 east longitude and within 68 km northeast of Sorong Regency, with a depth of 10 km.
According to the agency, the hypocentre of the earthquakes were not that deep and the mild tremors are simply a result of normal movements of the earth’s plates. No damages have been reported thus far.
