While some of the bakeries and pastry businesses in the city known as “Big Durian” are praised for their legacy and extraordinary capacity to endure throughout time, others stand out for their authenticity and refinement. Here, Indonesia Expat has listed 10 of those establishments that both foreign visitors and expatriates should check out while they are in Jakarta. All of the following places, ultimately, have one thing in common: they all leave you wanting just one more slice.

The Mandarin Cake Shop
Located inside the iconic Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta, The Mandarin Cake Shop has consistently freshened up its collection of cakes and pastries with no shortage of awe-inspiring presentation. Levant Boulangerie Pâtisserie
At Levant Boulangerie Pâtisserie, the sourdough breads are created with basic ingredients like wheat, water, salt, and, of course, time and patience, using traditional European methods. The breads’ unique flavour and quality come from a lengthy fermentation process (at least 24 hours). Meanwhile, the classic French baguette, which is created using a slow fermentation process, has become the best-selling product here at Levant Boulangerie Pâtisserie. In addition to a premium selection of breads made from responsibly farmed ancient grains, Levant Boulangerie Pâtisserie specialises in pure sourdough breads, including rye, multi-grain, and wheat loaves, as well as a variety of sandwiches and brioche.

Now occupying a 116-square-metre space on Level 2 of Grand Indonesia East Mall, the beloved Kempi Deli has reopened its doors with a refined concept that blends timeless elegance with a warm and welcoming ambience. Chicory European Patisserie

The more classic offerings, such as Bakesmith’s Black Forrest, Mocha Rum, and New York Cheesecake, have also become some of the favourites at this pastry shop. Moreover, thanks to the cakes’ remarkable designs, Bakesmith has also become popular among those looking to purchase unique birthday cakes for their loved ones. Recently, Bakesmith has made its pastry offerings available for purchase at Plaza Indonesia, Central Jakarta. Fun fact: Bakesmith is one of the very few pastry shops in Jakarta that are pet-friendly. Gontran Cherrier Indonesia
Located in the busy Senopati neighbourhood in South Jakarta, Gontran Cherrier Indonesia is an authentic French bakery and restaurant that brings about the concept of both elegance and poshness, not unlike stepping into a restaurant in the city of the Eiffel Tower. With indoor and semi-outdoor areas, enjoying a relaxed moment with friends while chatting and enjoying sumptuous pastries makes for an even more memorable experience here at Gontran Cherrier Indonesia. Upon entering, diners may find a tempting display of their various bakery and pastry products. Diners can order beef Macadamia Gold croissant, mushroom croissant, almond croissant, tiger almond financier, tuna puff, and ciabatta cheese. Main dishes are also available, such as croque monsieur, croque madame, beef bourguignon, shakshouka, and blanquette de boeuf. Maison Weiner Cake Shop
Regarded as one of the oldest bakeries in Jakarta, Maison Weiner Cake Shop, which has existed since 1936, always serves fresh, preservative-free bread. On top of that, all the bread and cakes sold in this shop still use old-school, family heirloom recipes without any changes. Every day, Maison Weiner Cake Shop produces between 80 and 100 bread and cake recipes, with at least 50 varieties of bread alone. Some recipes are also made on specific days or to order. Of the many bread and cake varieties served at Maison Weiner Cake Shop, some of the must-try are saucijsbrood (Dutch-style sausage bread with the aroma of authentic spiced beef), ontbijtkoek (classic pastry with a strong cinnamon flavour, plus nuts and raisins for a fragrant aroma), and roemhoren (classic pastry rolled like a trumpet with a rich vanilla custard filling).

Toko Roti Tegal
Having sold breads and pastries since 1968, Toko Roti Tegal is perhaps best known for exuding the nostalgia of the late 1960s and 1970s. Today, Toko Roti Tegal sells breads, cakes, pastries, traditional snacks, and dozens of other treats—all of which are usually displayed in classic, glass display cases. Some of the most popular pastries here happen to be the more traditional ones, such as onde-onde, pastel, steamed sponge cake, rolled omelette, pineapple pie, packaged martabak, stuffed tofu, and putu ayu—highly recommended for foreign travellers who are curious about what authentic Indonesian pastries taste like. On top of that, there are also packages of market snacks (jajanan pasar), birthday cakes, and several combinations that can be ordered. Fun fact: Toko Roti Tegal is also known as the place where Soe Hok Gie, a famous student activist from the 1960s, met his crush before his untimely death in 1969.
