Police Close Cilincing Charcoal Industry, Health Problems Reported

The Jakarta police have sealed a charcoal industry in Cilincing

After complaints from nearby residents, the Jakarta police have sealed an aluminum smelting and charcoal production home industry in Cilincing, North Jakarta.

The smoke emitted by the industrial activity has reportedly triggered respiratory diseases across the neighbourhood.

According to the North Jakarta Police chief, Senior Commander Budhi Herdi Susianto, the police sealed the factories with a police line as of Tuesday afternoon.

“The North Jakarta Police put a police line on the aluminum smelting home,” Budhi confirmed. The industry has allegedly violated articles 98, 103 and 109 of Law No. 32/2009 on environmental protection and management and another article regarding trade.

Evidence for the illegal business, such as aluminum waste mold, raw aluminum, refined aluminum dust, a milling machine, a furnace, and fuel for burning have also been collected by the police.

Hundreds of residents have reportedly suffered from acute respiratory infections (ISPA) from the industry’s emissions. A teacher at SD Cilincing 07 state elementary school was even admitted to hospital for acute pneumonia, which was triggered by inhaling smoke from the coconut shell charcoal and tin smelting industries near the school.
