BINUS SCHOOL Simprug students, in collaboration with Happy Hearts Indonesia, are making a significant impact in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) by rebuilding the Sumber Kasih PAUD in Sumba.
Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) notes that 26.36 million people in Indonesia are below the poverty line, with East Nusa Tenggara ranking third. This results in more than 50% of schools in East Nusa Tenggara being in unsuitable condition, either damaged or lacking adequate educational equipment.
In response to this problem, BINUS SCHOOL Simprug, together with Happy Hearts Indonesia, has collaborated to improve education from an early age in East Nusa Tenggara through the Bersama Untuk Bangsa group. This initiative was undertaken by several students: Kenneth William Santoso, Diptanshu Bose, Davrell Mylka Jowkins, and Ramiza Aqila Santoso.
In less than a year, 11 students from the 2026 cohort of BINUS SCHOOL Simprug collected donations and conducted research to rebuild the PAUD Sumber Kasih in Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara. This collaboration also contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4: Quality Education, Goal 10: Reducing Inequality, and Goal 15: Life on Land.
In June, Bersama Untuk Bangsa visited PAUD Sumber Kasih to see the completed project, which included rebuilding two classrooms, providing furniture to support learning such as tables, chairs, and children’s toys, installing a playground, and providing a decent bathroom.
A representative of Bersama Untuk Bangsa and BINUS SCHOOL Simprug student, Davrell Mylka Jowkins, hopes that this programme will help the next generation in East Nusa Tenggara receive a good quality education.
“Hopefully, in the future, the people of Sumba can overcome challenges related to education and become more educated and useful to many people,” said Davrell.
This programme is also driven by the spirit of BINUS SCHOOL Education in producing young people who are committed to fostering and empowering the community.
The goal of producing a generation that cares about the progress of education in Indonesia was also expressed by the Principal of BINUS SCHOOL Simprug, Isaac Koh. Isaac stated that learning at school is aimed at producing students who not only excel but are also able to provide benefits.
“At BINUS SCHOOL Simprug, we continue to encourage students to explore every interest and talent they have. We are also very proud of the initiative and hard work that has been put into rebuilding schools in Sumba. They have shown that the younger generation can make a real contribution to society,” explained Isaac.
CEO of Happy Hearts Indonesia, Sylvia Beiwinkler, expressed her gratitude for the contribution of BINUS SCHOOL Simprug students who have been willing to sacrifice their time and energy to help the less fortunate community.
“Congratulations to BINUS SCHOOL Simprug and Bersama Untuk Bangsa for their extraordinary achievements in rebuilding PAUD Sumber Kasih in Sumba. This inspiring journey proves that young people can have a significant impact on education. Their dedication and hard work create a brighter future for Indonesian children,” said Sylvia.
Additionally, the reconstruction of PAUD Sumber Kasih utilised 2.2 tons of recycled plastic waste managed by Blocksolutions Indonesia. This project, therefore, has a significant impact on the environment around the school and beyond. Through the programme to build a more decent PAUD, BINUS SCHOOL Education students have the opportunity to explore new horizons, fostering a high sensitivity to building the archipelago together.
