Government to Spend Rp600Billion Renovating Lake Toba

The transportation infrastructure of Lake Toba in North Sumatra is set to undergo a major renovation.

The Ministry of Transportation has allocated Rp600billion to make improvements to the area.

According to Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, the project is part of the “10 New Bali” plan, launched by the government to support the development of 10 tourism area. The other nine areas are Labuan Bajo, Kuta Mandalika, Belitung, Seribu Islands, Wakatobi, Tanjung Lesung, Morotai, Borobudur, and Bromo.

“We know that Toba is one of the remarkable tourist destinations. So we will enhance several transport infrastructure items here, including this Muara Port,” the Transportation Minister confirmed on Monday, July 29.

Budi said that the budget would be used to finance the development of 12 ports, namely Balige, Muara, Ambarita, Ajibata, Simanindo, Tigaras, Sipinggan, Onan Runggu, Onan Baru, Nainggolan, Pakkara, and Marbuntoruan. The government also plans to build five huge ships for transport in the lake area.
