JEC Eye Hospitals and Clinics has officially commenced construction of JEC BALI @ Sanur with a groundbreaking ceremony held in the Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Bali.
The establishment of JEC BALI @ Sanur further strengthens the position of Bali and Indonesia as leading destinations in the global health tourism sector. The new facility will serve as a global-standard eye health centre, adopting the ‘Blue Hospital’ concept and pioneering specialised ophthalmology services within the region.
According to research by IMARC Group, Indonesia’s health tourism market was valued at US$1.7 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow significantly, reaching US$9.6 billion by 2033. Meanwhile, Bali continues to demonstrate robust performance as an international destination. Data from the Bali Provincial Statistics Agency recorded 6,948,754 international visitor arrivals throughout 2025 — an increase of 9.72 percent compared with the previous year.
DR. Dr. Johan A. Hutauruk, SpM(K), President Director of JEC Group and President Director of PT Nitra Sanata Bali (NSB), stated that the establishment of the Sanur SEZ represents a strategic government initiative to reinforce Indonesia’s role as an international health and wellness destination.
“As a leader in ophthalmology services for more than four decades, JEC will introduce JEC BALI @ Sanur, supported by experienced subspecialist consultants, advanced eye surgery technology, and innovations that have contributed to the advancement of Indonesia’s eye health sector,” he said.
He added that through the ‘Blue Hospital’ concept, patients will not only receive high-quality medical care but also benefit from a holistic healing experience supported by intelligent building systems and a patient-friendly environment.

Targeted for Completion in 2027, Serving 30,000 Visits in Its First Year
JEC BALI @ Sanur is being developed on a 6,200-square-metre site, with a total building area of 12,000 square metres, comprising four floors and a semi-basement. The project is scheduled for completion in 2027 and is expected to accommodate up to 30,000 patient visits during its first year of operation.
In addition to serving the local Balinese market, the facility will target upper-middle-class domestic patients, expatriate communities, and international visitors.
JEC’s reputation as an eye healthcare provider is internationally recognised. The organisation is a member of the World Association of Eye Hospitals (WAEH) and the only Indonesian representative serving on its board. JEC is also a co-founder of the ASEAN Association of Eye Hospitals (AAEH), a collaborative forum for eye hospitals across Southeast Asia.
Its commitment to international quality standards is further reflected in achieving Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation four consecutive times in 2014, 2017, 2020, and 2023, making it the only eye hospital in Indonesia to attain this distinction.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by the Governor of Bali, Dr. Ir. I Wayan Koster, M.M., and Christine Hutabarat, President Director of PT Hotel Indonesia Natour (InJourney Hospitality).
The Governor welcomed the new facility as a tangible example of public–private collaboration in developing the Sanur SEZ. He expressed confidence that the international-standard eye health centre would enhance the quality of healthcare services while strengthening Bali’s competitiveness as a world-class health tourism destination.
Meanwhile, PT Hotel Indonesia Natour emphasised that the collaboration forms part of its broader strategy to strengthen The Sanur as an integrated health and wellness precinct supported by a world-class tourism ecosystem.

Blue Hospital: Integrating Smart Ecosystems, Sustainability and Human Wellbeing
JEC BALI @ Sanur adopts the ‘Blue Hospital’ concept — a forward-looking hospital model that comprehensively integrates smart and green principles. Developed by Deerns, a global engineering consultancy, the concept is built upon six key pillars: patient-centricity, optimal health outcomes, cost efficiency, human wellbeing, environmental sustainability, and building intelligence.
Its implementation is structured around three principal pillars:
- People – prioritising the health and well-being of both patients and medical professionals.
- Sustainability – incorporating energy-efficient systems and environmentally responsible materials to reduce carbon footprint.
- Operational Efficiency – utilising real-time data to enhance service reliability and performance.
Planned features include smart parking systems, motion-sensor lighting for energy efficiency, and air quality monitoring sensors installed in strategic areas to ensure a safe and healthy clinical environment.
Comprehensive High-Technology Services
JEC BALI @ Sanur will provide a range of advanced specialist services, including:
- FLACS (Semi-robotic Cataract Surgery) for high-precision cataract procedures.
- SMILE PRO, LASIK and Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) treatments for personalised vision correction.
- Glaucoma Centre equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment technology.
- Vitreoretinal services, including surgical procedures, injections and laser therapy.
- Myopia Control Centre for managing and slowing myopia progression.
- Dry Eye Centre offering modern diagnostic approaches and personalised treatment plans.
“The presence of JEC BALI @ Sanur is not merely about expanding facilities, but about building a sustainable and inclusive eye health ecosystem. We hope this development will help reduce outbound medical travel while attracting international patients to Indonesia,” Dr. Johan concluded.
Since its establishment in 1984, JEC Eye Hospitals and Clinics has steadily expanded its network and now operates five eye hospitals and eleven primary eye clinics across Indonesia. In addition to JEC BALI @ Sanur, the organisation plans to open new branches in Kediri and Tangerang this year.
