Research conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has placed Jakarta in the bottom 10 of the Safe Cities Index. Jakarta ranks in 53rd place out of the 60 cities surveyed.
The index examines personal and digital safety, as well as health and infrastructure. This year, Jakarta ranks in 43rd place for personal security, 55th for digital security, 53rd for health security, and 49th for infrastructure.
Editor of the Safe Cities Report, Naka Kondo, stated that the report had taken all the above factors into account, because they are inter-connected to each other.
“Although we divide safety into four pillars, it’s rare for a city to perform well in one but low in another,” Kondo said. Because infrastructure does not change quickly, the ranks of the cities included don’t generally change much when compared to previous years’ results.
Jakarta’s neighbouring cities such as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur rank second and 35th respectively. Meanwhile, Yangon in Myanmar claimed the 58th spot. According to the EIU, Jakarta still lacks city level urban planning and disaster mitigation measures.
