Mayapada Hospital Becomes Indonesia’s Pioneer of ERAS®, Delivering Faster Recovery for Knee Replacement Surgery

Mayapada Hospital has once again demonstrated its commitment to internationally recognised healthcare innovation through the implementation of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS®) protocol for Robotic Total Knee Replacement (TKR) procedures at Mayapada Hospital Surabaya.

Through this initiative, Mayapada Hospital Surabaya has become the first hospital in Indonesia to adopt comprehensive ERAS®-based care standards for Robotic TKR procedures, while also officially joining the ERAS Society, the global authority in evidence-based modern post-operative recovery standards. The recognition was announced during the ERAS Congress 2026 on the 13th of May 2026, attended by delegates from more than 10 countries.

The ERAS® programme is a globally recognised multidisciplinary approach designed to reduce surgical stress, ensure optimal consistency of care, accelerate patient recovery, and improve both clinical outcomes and the overall patient experience. Today, ERAS® implementation has become an important benchmark in the transformation of modern surgical care across internationally accredited hospitals in Europe, the United States, Australia, and Asia, as it has been proven to support healthcare services that are more efficient, safer, and increasingly patient-centred.

Chief Medical Officer of Mayapada Healthcare, dr. Dini Handayani, explained, “At Mayapada Healthcare, we believe the success of knee replacement surgery today should not only be measured by implant durability or technological sophistication, but also by the ability to deliver more optimal patient recovery, allowing patients to resume their daily activities more quickly with more consistent clinical outcomes and higher satisfaction levels. TKR procedures at Mayapada Hospital are built upon three key pillars: precision surgery assisted by robotic technology, the implementation of ERAS® protocols, and active collaboration among multidisciplinary teams. At Mayapada Hospital Surabaya, TKR procedures are also supported by the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution, which helps improve surgical precision and accuracy. Meanwhile, the ERAS® approach is continuously being strengthened and gradually expanded across Mayapada Hospital Jakarta Selatan and Mayapada Hospital Kuningan as part of our commitment to delivering more integrated and patient-focused healthcare services.”

Dr Dini further emphasised that technology remains a supporting tool for doctors in enhancing the accuracy of medical procedures. “Technology helps improve precision, but it must still be supported by proper clinical judgement and the expertise of doctors,” she said.

To date, the implementation of robotic TKR at MHSB has shown significant results in improving surgical precision, with implant misalignment rates considerably lower than those seen in conventional procedures. The combination of robotic surgery and the ERAS® protocol has also produced improved clinical outcomes, including shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times, and reduced post-operative pain.

The implementation of robotic TKR and ERAS® at MHSB is led by Prof. Dr. dr. Dwikora Novembri Utomo, supported by orthopaedic specialists, anaesthesiologists, rehabilitation medicine specialists, nurses, and pain management teams working within an integrated care pathway. The procedure is supported by the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution from Johnson & Johnson MedTech as the primary supporting technology, enabling more precise and accurate procedures, accelerating recovery, and reducing the risk of revision surgery by more than 30 per cent.

Prof. Dwikora explained that the integration of robotic TKR and ERAS® has had a tangible impact on patient recovery outcomes. “Through the robotic-assisted surgery and ERAS® approach, patients are able to regain mobility more quickly, experience less post-operative pain, and return to their daily routines sooner compared to conventional methods. Most importantly, this approach enables us to deliver more consistent outcomes for patients,” he said.

He further added, “The implementation of this programme has produced more optimal treatment outcomes with significant and measurable clinical impact. The average length of hospital stay has been reduced from approximately five days to only two days, while recovery time has improved by nearly 50 per cent, allowing patients to regain mobility and return to daily activities more quickly. Complication rates have also decreased by up to 60 per cent. During the evaluation period, there were no major complications identified, such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), pneumonia, or patient readmissions following surgery.”

Founder of the ERAS Society, Prof. Olle Ljungqvist, also expressed optimism regarding the implementation of ERAS® in improving global standards of modern surgical care. “Together, we can take surgery to where it should be,” said Prof. Olle.

The ERAS Society itself is an international organisation recognised as a global reference in the development of evidence-based surgical care standards. Becoming part of the ERAS® Society means joining a global ecosystem dedicated to continuously improving healthcare quality through data-driven clinical outcome measurement, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the implementation of international standards focused on patient safety and long-term recovery.
