Singapore Arrest Indonesian Maids for Supporting IS

Islamic State Militant

Three Indonesian domestic workers have been detained under Singapore’s security laws for supporting the Islamic State (IS) group.

The city-state had arrested the trio after allegedly spreading violent ideology.

According to Singapore’s interior ministry, Anindia Afiyantari, 33, Retno Hernayani, 36, and 31-year-old Turmini, who have six to 13 years of work experience in Singapore, reportedly became supporters of IS after viewing videos of bomb attacks and beheadings online.

They have also developed a significant online network of people who share a similar ideology. The domestic workers had also donated funds to support IS and similar overseas entities. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the three had also donated funds to the JAD (Jamaah Ansharut Daulah) to carry out terrorist activities.

The women are currently being held under Singapore’s Internal Security Act, which allows for detention without trial for up to two years.
