Jakarta to Open Bike Rental Service Sudirman and Thamrin for Workers

The Jakarta administration says it will open a bike rental service near Jl. Sudirman and Jl. MH Thamrin for office workers in the city’s busiest business district.

The plan is part of a bigger project to ease traffic in the city’s main thoroughfare by improving mass transportation service, widening sidewalks as well as opening a bicycle lane.

“We will open a bike lane and the mass transportation network could be directly connected with bike rental services that would be available in the area,” Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said on Sunday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Djarot, who is set to step down from his position later this month, said the service could be very useful for office workers who expect to hop from one building to another.

“People can rent these bikes to travel from one building to another,” said Djarot, who is expected to step down from his position later this month.

The plan to improve the sidewalk along the city’s main thoroughfare will begin with the widening of the sidewalk along Jl. Sudirman, from the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle to the Bendungan Hilir area in Central Jakarta. The bicycle lane will be opened along the sidewalk.

As previously reported, Jakarta has banned motorbikes on Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat in Central Jakarta and is looking to apply the same policy in three other thoroughfares, including Jl. Sudirman.
