Police Arrest ATM Technician for Stealing from 3 Machines

The technician reportedly stole the keys for the ATM, before proceeding to steal cash.

Police have arrested a man who has allegedly robbed three ATMs in Condet, East Jakarta, yesterday.

Kramat Jati Police chief Commissioner Nordin confirmed that the suspect, Mardiansyah, is an ATM maintenance technician. “The suspect is a technician who generally services broken ATMs. On 27th April, he was ordered to check three different ATMs,” Nordin added.

Mardiansyah was initially accompanied by a security guard called Haris, who lost sight of him. The technician reportedly stole the keys for the ATM, before proceeding to steal cash. According to the police, he has stolen a total of Rp 36 million.

The police had initially received reports of ATM robbery, which prompted them to investigate the CCTV recordings. Mardiansyah will be charged based on the criminal code on theft, which carries a maximum of a five-year prison sentence.
