Opposition to the use of electric bikes (e-bikes) on Gili Trawangan, North Lombok, has begun to be voiced openly by foreign tourists.

In a photo recently posted on the Instagram account of Tír na nÓg Gili Trawangan, an Irish bar in the area, several foreign tourists can be seen carrying signs reading “F*CK E-BIKES” and “E-BIKES KILL BUNNIES”. Another sign features a prohibition symbol. The signs were displayed during the bar’s annual Halloween costume contest on Saturday, the 31st of October.

Gili Trawangan has long been known as a tourist destination free from motorised vehicles. Transportation on the island typically relies on bicycles and cidomo (traditional horse-drawn carriages), while the use of other vehicles is restricted to preserve its character and pristine environment.

Recently, however, the use of e-bikes has become increasingly common. They are not only used by local residents but are also widely available for hire to tourists. This situation has led to concerns that Gili Trawangan is becoming increasingly crowded.

Previously, in October, the North Lombok Regency Government, through its Transportation Agency, had announced plans to regulate the use of electric bicycles in the Tiga Gili (Three Gilis) tourist area, comprising Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. The initiative aims to ensure tourists’ comfort while upholding existing local regulations.

At the time, Asmara had also stated that Regional Regulation Number 5 of 2021 would serve as the legal basis for regulating motorised vehicles in the area. According to him, the operation of any vehicle equipped with an engine is prohibited, with the exception of waste collection vehicles.

“In accordance with the mandate of Regional Regulation Number 5 of 2021, there is no provision for electric-powered vehicles in the Tiga Gili tourist area. Vehicles equipped with engines are not permitted, with the sole exception of waste collection vehicles,” Asmara had said on the 15th of October.
