Gili Trawangan Ranked Among World’s Top Hidden Islands

One of the world’s leading travel media brands, Travel + Leisure, has released its list of the top 30 hidden islands in the world, with Gili Trawangan, located in West Nusa Tenggara, securing second place on the list.

Amid growing interest among travellers seeking tranquillity and authentic holiday experiences, Indonesia’s small islands have become increasingly popular destinations, with Gili Trawangan in West Nusa Tenggara emerging as one of the favourites. Gili Trawangan is one of the three islands that make up the Gili Islands, located just off the coast of Lombok. Its stunning beaches are complemented by crystal-clear blue waters, white sandy shores, and breathtaking sunset views.

Although it is already well known among international tourists, Travel + Leisure noted that Gili Trawangan offers a distinctive atmosphere and experience compared to many other tourist destinations. One of the island’s main attractions is the absence of motorised vehicles, as visitors may only find bicycles, cidomo (horse-drawn carts), or walking as means of transport. This creates a more peaceful atmosphere, free from the noise of engines and traffic congestion.

Searching for the Bali of, say, 1970? Head to Gili Trawangan, a tiny island near Lombok dotted with laid-back cafes, surf schools, and dive centers. No motorized traffic is allowed here, so it’s up to your own two feet to walk or bike everywhere you go. The daily agenda involves nothing more than fishing, diving, or kicking back with a cold beer at Scallywags or Le Petit Gili, a charmingly ramshackle bar and eatery,” travel writer Anne Olivia Bauso wrote for Travel + Leisure on its website.

Life on Gili Trawangan moves at a slower pace, making it an ideal destination for those looking to escape the demands of everyday life. For those seeking an even quieter experience, visitors can explore the western and northern parts of the island, where the atmosphere is more tranquil than on the eastern side, which is renowned for its vibrant nightlife.

Furthermore, Gili Trawangan is also recognised as one of the best destinations for experiencing marine life and underwater beauty. Snorkelling, diving, and even fishing are among the most popular activities for visitors to the island. In addition, travellers can take a ferry to Lombok and visit one of Indonesia’s most famous volcanoes, Mount Rinjani.

Besides Gili Trawangan, two other destinations from Southeast Asia were also included on the list: Côn Đảo in Vietnam and Mabul Island in Malaysia.
