As healthcare professionals who work most closely with patients, nurses are strategically positioned to identify challenges in clinical practice, develop solutions, and ensure that every stage of care becomes safer and more effective.
This commitment has been demonstrated by the Mayapada Hospital Nursing Team through two infection prevention and control (IPC) innovations that have reached an international forum and were selected for presentation at the 12th International Congress of the Asia Pacific Society of Infection Control (APSIC) 2026, held from the 30th of July to the 2nd of August in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Presented to more than 1,500 delegates from 30 countries, the two innovations demonstrate Mayapada Hospital‘s application of evidence-based practices that have generated measurable improvements in service quality and patient safety:
- First, a more standardised intravenous (IV) flushing procedure to improve the safety and efficiency of medication administration. The innovation reduced the number of preparation steps by 38%, shortened procedure time by 32%, increased compliance with aseptic procedures to 95%, reduced the risk of IV contamination by 20%, cut medical waste by 30%, and reduced medication preparation errors from seven cases to zero.
- Second, a digital monitoring system to strengthen the monitoring and follow-up of surgical site infections (SSI). The system increased compliance with SSI monitoring from 8% to 78%, while strengthening documentation and data integration on a single platform and enabling faster detection of infections to support timely patient care.
