A suspected militant who tried to attack a police station in Surabaya has reportedly been shot and taken into custody. The suspect reportedly slashed an officer with a sickle.

According to East Java police spokesman Frans Barung Mangera, the 30-year-old suspect entered a police station in Surabaya in East Java on Saturday afternoon, on Independence Day. The suspect proceeded to attack an officer who was on duty. He also managed to attack a second officer on the face.

Meanwhile, National Police spokesman Iqbal Alqudusy explained that the suspect had been radicalised by online materials posted by Aman Abdurrahman, who was sentenced to death last year for orchestrating a series of terrorist attacks in Indonesia. Abdurrahman was the ideological leader of Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) a radical group loosely affiliated to the Islamic State.
