Jakarta Provincial Government to Hold Simultaneous Lights-Off Initiative on 25th of April

On Saturday, the 25th of April, the Jakarta Provincial Government is urging residents to take part in an energy-saving initiative by switching off their lights for one hour.

This initiative is a part of the Earth Day commemoration, which originally took place on Wednesday, the 22nd of April.

The simultaneous lights-off will take place precisely from 8.30 PM to 9.30 PM local time, covering five administrative areas across Jakarta as a tangible contribution to global environmental sustainability.

In Central Jakarta, locations include Jalan MH Thamrin, Jalan Sudirman from Dukuh Atas to the Sampoerna Strategic Building, and the area around Jalan Medan Merdeka in front of the Presidential Palace. Additional areas include Jalan Gerbang Pemuda, Jalan Asia Afrika, the City Hall courtyard, and the Central Jakarta Mayor’s Office complex. Meanwhile, in North Jakarta, the blackout will encompass Jalan Yos Sudarso, Jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan, and the Mayor’s Office area.

In West Jakarta, areas scheduled to temporarily experience power cuts on Saturday include Jalan Daan Mogot, Jalan Kembangan Raya, and the Mayor’s Office complex. Meanwhile, East Jakarta will switch off lights along Jalan Dr Sumarno, Jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan, and the area surrounding the East Jakarta Mayor’s Office. The blackout in South Jakarta will cover Jalan Prapanca Raya, Jalan Rasuna Said, and the Sudirman area from the Sampoerna Strategic Building to the Youth Statue, as well as the South Jakarta Mayor’s Office.

This blackout initiative is said to be more than just symbolic, with measurable impacts on energy efficiency. According to data from the official Instagram account @dkijakarta, a similar initiative back in the year 2025 yielded significant environmental benefits, with electricity savings reaching 439.76 MWh. Last year’s blackout initiative also delivered positive economic outcomes, with savings of Rp636,655,763 and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 365.53 tonnes of CO₂.

On top of that, the policy requires all office buildings under the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to switch off their lights on Saturday as well. Several iconic landmarks in the capital—including the National Monument (Monumen Nasional or Monas), Jakarta City Hall, the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, the Pemuda Statue, and the General Sudirman Statue—will also go dark. However, essential public service facilities such as hospitals, community health centres, and clinics will continue operating with normal lighting.

In addition, on Saturday, Jakarta’s private sector—including office buildings, shopping centres, hotels, restaurants, and apartments—is also encouraged to cut its power.
