Bali Island School (BIS) and Livingseas Asia are committed to fostering environmental awareness among young minds with a coral workshop on a pontoon boat at Padang Bai Beach.
As an international school devoted to empowering students to contribute to the world around them, Bali Island School teamed up with Livingseas Asia for a coral restoration workshop on the 16th of April 2024.
The workshop began with a presentation session led by Livingseas Asia, during which students engaged in an interactive discussion about coral reefs and the importance of caring for our ecosystem. After the discussion, all participants boarded a speedboat to continue their workshop on a pontoon boat, a flat-bottomed vessel that relies on floats to remain buoyant.
Engaging in hands-on coral restoration, students had the opportunity to observe living coral from the genus Acropora. Using coral fragments, they planted these pieces on racks positioned in a protected area by the professional divers of Livingseas Asia. Furthermore, they were encouraged to christen their reef contributions, symbolising their dedication to marine conservation and environmental stewardship. A leisurely snorkelling excursion concluded the workshop in an enjoyable manner.
In addition to fulfilling part of BIS’ environmental commitment, the coral workshop was organised to commemorate Earth Day. Under the guidance of the Livingseas Asia team, students delved into reef ecosystems, acquiring invaluable knowledge about marine conservation and methods for preserving our oceans.
“This learning experience provided an exceptional opportunity to combine active learning with collaboration with a local NGO in the restoration of Bali’s coral reefs. We aspire to establish a long-term partnership with Livingseas Asia as part of the Service as Action Program and the Bali Island School Co-Curricular Learning experiences,” remarked Mr Jay Kumpel, the Learning Support Teacher at Bali Island School.
