What Is BPH and Why It Affects Ageing Men.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition in which the prostate gland gradually enlarges as men age. Although it is benign and non-cancerous, this enlargement can compress the urinary tract and lead to urinary problems that significantly interfere with daily activities.

“BPH can occur in almost all older men, particularly those over the age of 50. The problem is that many men do not recognise the symptoms or assume they are a normal part of ageing, which often results in delayed treatment,” said dr Syifa Fauziah Fadhly, Sp.U, urology specialist at Bethsaida Hospital Serang.

Symptoms of BPH to Watch Out For

BPH does not appear suddenly; its symptoms usually develop gradually and can affect quality of life, including:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night (nocturia)
  • A weak or intermittent urine stream
  • A feeling of incomplete emptying after urination
  • The need to strain to begin urinating
  • A sensation that urination is not smooth or fully relieved

“If men experience these symptoms continuously, it is important to consult a urologist promptly. Early treatment greatly influences the success of therapy and the patient’s quality of life,” added dr Syifa.

Causes and Risk Factors of BPH

Prostate enlargement is caused by hormonal changes that occur as men age. In addition to ageing, other factors believed to increase the risk of BPH include:

  • A family history of BPH
  • A sedentary lifestyle and an unhealthy diet
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes or other metabolic disorders

How to Prevent and Manage BPH

Although BPH cannot be completely prevented because it is closely related to ageing, its symptoms can be minimised through a healthy lifestyle, such as:

  • Increasing water intake
  • Reducing alcohol and caffeine consumption
  • Maintaining a healthy body weight
  • Exercising regularly
  • Undergoing routine prostate examinations from the age of 40

BPH management may involve medication or medical procedures such as surgery, depending on the severity of the symptoms.

“We assess patients comprehensively, starting from symptom history and physical examination to supporting tests such as prostate ultrasound. The goal is to determine the most appropriate and effective therapy,” explained dr Syifa.

To meet the community’s need for comprehensive urology services, Bethsaida Hospital Serang is now equipped with complete facilities for managing BPH cases and other urinary tract disorders.

“This reflects our commitment to men’s health and quality of life. We are therefore dedicated to providing leading healthcare services for the community through our Urology Clinic, supported by experienced urology specialists, modern diagnostic and curative equipment, and safe and comfortable therapeutic procedures,” said dr Tirtamulya, Director of Bethsaida Hospital Serang.
