Indonesia Targets 17.6 Million Foreign Tourist Arrivals by 2026

Indonesia is aiming to welcome between 16 million and 17.6 million international visitors in 2026, supported by improved connectivity, visa reforms and stronger digital governance.

The Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, has recently said that Indonesia’s tourism sector is set to continue its positive recovery throughout 2025. This is reflected in the sector’s contribution to gross domestic product (GDP), which reached 3.96% in the third quarter of 2025.

Tourism foreign exchange earnings during the same period totalled US$13.82 billion, with the sector employing 25.91 million people. As of November 2025, Indonesia had recorded 13.98 million foreign tourist arrivals. In the third quarter of 2025, average spending per visitor stood at US$1,259. The largest numbers of visitors came from Malaysia (17.3%), Australia (11.3%), Singapore (10.5%), and China (8.8%).

Entering 2026, in line with what the [Indonesian] Minister of Tourism previously stated, the 2025 target of 15 million foreign tourist visits has been achieved, and the target for 2026 is between 16 million and 17.6 million visits,Hartarto said at a press conference following the Tourism Coordination Meeting on Monday, the 12th of January.

Meanwhile, the Tourism Coordination Meeting also agreed on several key pillars to strengthen the sector going forward, including accelerating the development of infrastructure and connectivity. This strategy will be implemented by enhancing connectivity between existing airports and several newly opened ones, as well as through joint programmes between the central and regional governments, particularly in priority tourism destinations. Entry procedures will also be simplified by reviewing the Visit Visa policy for foreign visitors.

In addition, governance reform and digitalisation will be pursued, including improvements to the event management ecosystem across the country through integrated licensing and stronger safety standards supported by tourism insurance.

“Ahead of Eid al-Fitr, we have also been instructed to prepare programmes, including those implemented in previous years, such as transport fare discounts, retail promotions and similar initiatives,” Hartarto added.
