5.3 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts West Papua, No Tsunami Potential

An earthquake had shaken West Papua today

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake had shaken West Papua today at 12.42pm Eastern Indonesia Time.

The epicentre of the quake has been estimated to be 57km northeast of Tambrauw regency.

According to the Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency, or BMKG, the earthquake had no tsunami potential. The agency also warned the public to remain calm and vigilant.

Based on the epicentre and the hypocentre, the quake is classified as being shallow. It had reportedly occurred due to local fault activity. The tremor was only felt in the area of Tambrauw.

“There is no tsunami potential,” the BMKG confirmed on their twitter account. The depth of the quake was 10km below ground and so far no damage has been reported.
