Jokowi Orders Police to Solve Novel Baswedan Case in Three Months

Novel Baswedan

President Joko Widodo has ordered the national police to solve the Novel Baswedan acid attack case within three months.

“The chief of police had requested a six-month deadline. I gave him three as the technical team must be able to solve it by then,” the president said at the state palace today. Jokowi acknowledged that while the attack case is certainly not easy to solve, he aims to re-evaluate the police’s progress after 3 months, before deciding whether to employ independent investigators for the case.

He also asserted that the same question should not be raised to him again and again. “If every now and then you come to me, what job would the chief of police do?” he said.

In a report submitted by a joint team formed by the chief of Indonesian police to investigate the attack, it was revealed that the team had experienced difficulties in finding the attacker. However, they were convinced that the attack was motivated by revenge. The joint team have been working together since January 2019.

Novel Baswedan, senior investigator at the Corruption Eradication Commission, or KPK, was attacked by two strangers on 11th April 2017. The two unidentified men threw acid on his face as Novel was on his way home after his morning prayers at the mosque.
