Indonesia to Meet Microsoft, Boost Local Games Industry

Head of Indonesia’s Creative Economy Agency, Triawan Munaf, said he will be in talks with Microsoft soon about the development of Indonesia’s locally-made games with the hope that the games could be used in Microsoft products.

“I haven’t had time to meet with Microsoft, but they have been waiting. Hopefully we will meet in September,” Munaf said at the Korea Content Expo event in Jakarta International Expo, Kemayoran, on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Munaf said he asked for a meeting with Microsoft two months ago at the Game Prime 2017 event.

The meeting would be of interest to the local games industry, which Munaf says is one of the most promising creative economy industry in the country.

However, local game-makers are still finding it hard to fit into the domestic games market or get their products out to the international market. Part of this is the poor game-making ecosystem in Indonesia, Munaf said, and he hopes that an intervention from the likes of Microsoft, Xbox and Nintendo can boost the gaming ecosystem in Indonesia.

A successful local games industry would boost the country’s creative industry, which has consistently increased in export value.

In 2016, the value of Indonesia’s creative industry export reached Rp.250 trillion (US$18 billion), or around 13 percent of the country’s total exports.
